March 27, 2013 (Des Moines, IA) -- Iowa Soccer Executive Director Harold Kahler has announced that the organization will be adding a fulltime staff member in June to head a newly-created position, Director of Competition and Camps.
Kahler explained, "We have and will continue to see growth in the area of providing competition and developmental opportunities for our members. It became evident that we not only needed this position, but by bringing all our competitions under one umbrella, it would allow us to do a better job providing services to and creating value for our members. This two-part makeover will also free a current staff member who will work on much-needed marketing, communications and member services initiatives."
On June 5, former Iowa youth soccer player and Des Moines native Lisa Grefe joins the staff as the Director of Competition and Camps. Grefe’s duties will encompass all Iowa Soccer competitions: the U09-10 Academy, the Iowa Premier Soccer League (IPSL), Iowa Soccer’s Indoor Series, Adult opportunities, the Kohl’s American Cup and the Iowa State Cup.
With the June retirement of IPSL Director Ted Bzdega, Grefe’s first undertaking will be as League Director. Kahler expects the transition of all competitions programming, and Developmental Camp, to take several months with current staff members’ responsibilities remaining status quo as Grefe gets the fall 2013 IPSL season underway.
Once the transition is complete, Jenny Wood, Director of Member Services and Tournament Director, will be heading Marketing, Communications and Member Services. Wood has been with Iowa Soccer since 2004, taking over the Iowa State Cup, the recreational cups and Developmental Camp in 2005.
Grefe graduated from Roosevelt High School and went on to a collegiate soccer career at the College of Saint Benedict. She returned to Des Moines and coached at Urbandale Soccer Club, Ankeny High School and Grand View University before heading to Massachusetts to earn a Master of Education in Psychology from Springfield College. From there she held administrative and coaching positions at a nonprofit sports and fitness organization in New York City before becoming Director of Athletics and Physical Education at Emma Willard School in upstate New York.
Kahler finalized, "We’ve been working strategically to shape services and staffing in order to better address member and organization needs. We’re excited about the changes with our staff and welcome Lisa back home!"
