Iowa City Alliance Makes History
June 26, 2013 (Des Moines) -- Iowa's three-time State Cup Champion U17 Girls Iowa City Alliance Heatwave took out Academy United (Ill.) in today's US Youth Soccer Region II Final, 3-1. The victory marks the first time an Iowa team has achieved a Regional Championship and sent a representative to the US Youth Soccer National Championship Series National Finals.
After taking a 1-0 lead late into the match, Alliance looked poised to take the win. Academy United had other plans and with seven minutes in regulation, knocked in the tying tally. The score stood and the teams went to the two 15-minute overtime periods.
Just over halfway into the first frame, Rose Ripslinger ripped a shot to put Heatwave up and back in the position to win. After a quick changeover at the break, the teams continued to trade opportunities with Illinois pushing all 11 players forward in late attempts to knock in another tying goal.
With only 1:30 to go and after a quick clear from the Heatwave defense, it was Ripslinger and the opposing goalkeeper fighting for a 50-50 ball at midfield. Risplinger was not to be denied, winning the ball and calmly going the final 40 yards to get it into the net, sealing the history-making victory.
Congratulations to Coach Paul Dayrell and Assistant Tom Bitter and their incredible group of players: Riley Behan, Allison Bitter, Elizabeth Crow, Kaela Dickerman, Anna Hausler, Paige Hendrickson, Jordan Holmes, Eleni Katz, McKay Matheson, Emily Meeker, Allison Peterson, Kattie Redlinger, Meghan Redlinger, Rose Ripslinger, Julian Trizzino and Katie Wick.
