Bzdega to Retire
March 25, 2013 (Des Moines) -- Ted Bzdega, Director of the Iowa Premier Soccer League (IPSL) since its inception in 2003, has announced his retirement effective at the end of the 2013 spring season.
Bzdega’s years of service to the statewide soccer community have helped accelerate the development of the game in our state. He began his volunteerism by coaching his son and daughter, and eventually served as Vice President and President of his home club, Bondurant. His administrative roles continued on the state level when he became a District Representative to the Iowa Soccer Board of Directors, and then became its Executive Vice President. Bzdega also became a USSF Certified Referee and certified referee assignor.
A longtime Iowa Soccer Tournament Director, he was the familiar face in the tent at the American Cup and Chevy Cup recreational tournaments, guiding many first-time coaches through their first tournament experiences. Bzdega was also the Director of the Iowa State Cup during that time.
With the IPSL under his direction, Bzdega has seen the unique league grow to over 350 teams and much credit is due him for the increase. He works tirelessly to accommodate coaches’ requests for scheduling and guides the Directors of Coaching in running what is a true developmental league, not driven by scores and standings, but rather by making sure teams are placed in level-appropriate divisions, and by being flexible with rosters and schedules.
In 2007, Bzdega was named the Toyota President's Award Winner for Iowa in recognition of his tireless service and depth of contribution to the sport.
"On behalf of our staff, let me first say how much we will miss working with Ted," stated Iowa Soccer Executive Director Harold Kahler. "The level of service Ted has provided Iowa Soccer member teams, coaches and managers is legendary and is reflected in the growth of the league from 50 teams in the major metro areas to over 300 statewide. His retirement is more than well-earned and we wish him all the best!"
Later this week an announcement will be released regarding Bzdega’s successor.
