Meggie Malm
During this competition, we remember and celebrate the life of an outstanding Iowa soccer player, Meggie Malm. Meggie’s youth career included playing for the Iowa United Club, the West Des Moines Soccer Club and Roosevelt High School. She continued her career at the University of Missouri, graduating with numerous athletic and academic honors in May 2007.
As a key member of the West Des Moines Odyssey, Meggie won State Cup Championships in the Under 17 and the Under 18 divisions. She also participated in the Iowa Soccer Association’s Olympic Development Program from 1997 to 2002, where she distinguished herself by being named to the Region II Pool from 1999-2001.
Meggie attended Roosevelt High School, scoring over 100 goals in four years for the Roughriders. She was named All-Conference Honorable Mention as a freshman and earned her team’s Most Valuable Player distinction in 1999. She was All-Conference First Team in 2000 and 2001, during which she keyed Roosevelt’s runner-up finishes at the High School State Tournament. Meggie was named First-Team All-State in 2002.
After graduating from Roosevelt, Meggie played for the Division I Missouri Tigers where she played in 74 matches, with 63 starts. She helped Missouri reach the second round of the NCAA Tournament, as well as achieve a Top-20 national ranking.
Meggie’s success on the field was mirrored in her academic work. She was named an Outstanding Industrial Engineering Senior, made the College of Engineering Dean’s List, was on the Big Twelve Commissioner’s Honor Roll and was Academic All District 7 Soccer First Team. She was also a member of the Mystical Seven, a society that taps the seven outstanding seniors based on good deeds, selfless leadership and service to the campus and community. Meggie graduated Summa Cum Laude in Industrial Engineering in 2007.
"Meggie embodied all that is great in sport – honor, sportsmanship, work ethic, humbleness, and self-sacrifice for the good of the team……She has left a legacy….and is someone who would have, and did, represent the State of Iowa in the best possible light."
Announced in June 2008, we are proud to unveil the first-ever naming of an Iowa State Cup Division in celebration and recognition of Meggie Malm: The 17U Girls Meggie Malm Cup.
