Championship Weekend Set for Iowa Spring Presidents Cup

After an exciting season of play, the stage is now set for the Spring Championship Weekend of Iowa Presidents Cup. The final round of the competition will take place this Saturday and Sunday at Spring Creek Soccer Complex in Altoona, with winners being decided in the 13U and 14U age groups.

“Iowa Soccer is excited to host the top teams in the state as they compete for a place in Regional Competitions,” said Dan Cataldi, Chief Executive Officer of the Iowa Soccer Association. “The 13U and 14U age groups are particularly fun as they generate a lot of excitement since they are only in their first or second year of competing at this level. The players, coaches and supporters will bring their passion to Altoona as they hope to earn a trip to St. Louis, creating a great environment over the weekend!”

Each spring, Iowa Soccer Association hosts its Presidents Cup for 13U and 14U teams in both the boys and girls divisions. Due to the spring high school season in Iowa, 15U to 19U age groups compete in the Fall Presidents Cup. Iowa Presidents Cup champions become eligible for regional play at the US Youth Soccer (USYS) Midwest Regional Presidents Cup this summer in St. Louis, with regional winners then moving onto the USYS National Presidents Cup in Tampa, Florida.

“Our state championship events always bring an extra level of excitement and emotion, as teams leave it all on the field for a chance to win and advance,” said Craig Winger, Chief Member Services Officer at Iowa Soccer Association. “The Iowa Presidents Cup is not just about claiming a title, it is about earning the opportunity to represent our state with pride at the USYS Midwest Regional Presidents Cup as part of TEAMIOWA.”

Heading into the weekend, Iowa Soccer Association would like to thank Wilson Trophy Company, Fine Designs, The Athletic Training Room, Kick It Forward, PRIME, Spond, FairWhistle, Kwik Star, SCORE, NCSA College Recruiting, Veo, Soccer Parenting Association, Spring Creek Soccer Complex, Spring Creek Football Club and the Iowa Referee Committee for their support of the Iowa Presidents Cup.

The USYS Presidents Cup provides a progressive and competitive environment to teams that might not otherwise get the opportunity to participate in a series of unique experiences highlighting competition, camaraderie and community.

Iowa Soccer Association and SCORE Sports ‘Share The Love’ with Local Clubs

Iowa Soccer Association and SCORE Sports ‘Share The Love’ with Local Clubs Across the State

Boone Soccer Club and Colo-Nesco Soccer Club Named Beneficiaries of Spring 2025 Program

Iowa Soccer Association, in proud partnership with SCORE Sports, has announced Boone Soccer Club and Colo-Nesco Soccer Club as the Spring 2025 recipients of its Share The Love Program. This statewide initiative is designed to recognize and support Iowa-based clubs that demonstrate exceptional dedication to growing the game of soccer at the grassroots level.

Through Share The Love, both Boone Soccer Club and Colo-Nesco Soccer Club have received essential soccer gear and apparel provided by SCORE Sports, resources that will help them elevate programming and provide even more value to the young athletes and families they serve.

“We love the opportunity to be part of the game at all levels and in all areas across the state,” said Craig Winger, Chief Member Services Officer at Iowa Soccer Association. “We are grateful to meet our members where they are, support them and simply thank them for their hard work in providing valuable soccer opportunities within their communities. It is their dedication that truly makes all the difference, and we are excited to help, thanks to our relationship with SCORE Sports.”

Launched in 2019, Share The Love was created as a way to give back to the community of member clubs that help strengthen soccer in Iowa. The initiative recognizes not just performance on the pitch, but also a commitment to inclusion, player development and positive impact within the local community that clubs represent. 33 different organizations in Iowa have benefitted from the program since its inception, and nearly 8,500 total items have been distributed (at a value of nearly $40,000). A wide variety of items have been supplied to recipients, including soccer balls, cones and pinnies (the most popular) to shin guards, goalkeeper gloves and first aid kits.

“At Iowa Soccer, our mission is to provide soccer opportunities,” said Dan Cataldi, Chief Executive Officer of Iowa Soccer Association. “This unique partnership with SCORE Sports allows us to help our members do just that by providing things that are needed to play, whether it be safety items like shin guards and goalkeeper gloves or the basics likes balls and cones. These items allow our members to invest their limited funds in other areas and help keep costs down, ensuring more kids have the chance to enjoy the sport throughout the state.”

SCORE Sports, the official uniform partner of Iowa Soccer Association, serves as the program sponsor of Share The Love. Their endorsement of this initiative ensures that selected clubs are provided with high-quality gear that enables their youth athletes to play, grow and thrive.

“At SCORE, we believe every kid deserves a chance to play, no matter where they’re from,” said Rebeka Beteivaz, Director of Marketing and Digital Commerce at SCORE Sports. “Supporting Iowa Soccer’s Share The Love initiative means equipping passionate clubs like Boone and Colo-Nesco with the tools they need to grow the game and make a lasting impact in their communities. We’re proud to stand with Iowa Soccer and celebrate these local heroes who are changing lives through sport.”

Boone Soccer Club, located in central Iowa, is a non-profit and educational organization whose mission is to foster the physical, mental and emotional growth and development of Boone’s youth through the sport of soccer. Colo-Nesco Soccer Club is a passionate local program that provides access to the game for young players in rural communities, exemplifying the spirit of grassroots soccer.

A Celebration of the Game: Iowa League America Festival Returns on May 2-4

Iowa League America Festival

The Iowa Soccer USYS League America Festival is officially returning over the weekend of May 2-4, with the event being hosted at the Spring Creek Sports Complex in Altoona. Now in its fourth decade of play, this annual festival is the largest recreational youth soccer event in Iowa, and it continues to be a one-of-a-kind experience where the focus is on fun, participation and spirited competition.

Registration is officially open for the League America Festival, but spots are filling up fast. In order to participate, teams must sign-up by April 13 in order to meet the registration deadline (unless maximum registration is reached beforehand). In addition to the friendly competition on the field, the League America Festival serves as a celebration of the game. Hosted by Iowa Soccer Association since 1992, the event brings together teams from across the state in an environment that is welcoming, well-organized and full of energy.

“We are thrilled to offer recreational soccer players and teams the chance to experience a well-run tournament and enjoy the game in a competitive yet welcoming environment,” said Craig Winger, Chief Member Services Officer at Iowa Soccer Association. “Our goal is to create a festival of fun, sportsmanship and camaraderie, where every participant can grow, have fun and make lasting memories with their team!”

With age groups ranging from 8U (4v4) all the way up to 14/15U (11v11 and small-sided formats), the League America Festival is built to match players with appropriately scaled competition. Entry fees range from $195 to $595 depending on age group, ensuring affordability while maintaining high-quality event standards.

“The Festival gives players a chance to face new opponents and rise to new challenges,” said Mike Wilson, Member Services Program Director at Iowa Soccer Association. “You will compete against clubs you may never see during the regular season. It is exciting, different and still rooted in that fun, recreational atmosphere.”

In addition to the matchday experience, the League America Festival incorporates player-first rules that align with U.S. Soccer’s development initiatives. Match lengths and field sizes are also adjusted for each age group to ensure an enjoyable, age-appropriate experience.

“The League America Festival is one of the best weekends of the year for soccer in Iowa,” said Dan Cataldi, Chief Executive Officer of Iowa Soccer Association. “It is the opportunity to bring together hundreds of kids who play because they just love the game. The chance to provide a joy-filled weekend loaded with smiles, laughter and positive support from spectators is special for everyone involved, and we are thrilled to continue the tradition of ensuring our recreational players have access to an event that is all about celebrating them.”

To protect the integrity of the event, only recreational teams are eligible to compete. Players may only roster on one team, and all coaches must meet Iowa Soccer Association’s Risk Management standards. These steps ensure that every sideline is managed in a safe and structured environment for each game.

Do not miss your chance to participate in this fun, family-friendly event! Registration is open now for the Iowa Soccer USYS League America Festival, but the window to sign-up will close on April 13. To learn more about the League America Festival, check out its official page on our website.

The 2025 Iowa Soccer Symposium was recently hosted at the MidAmerican Company RecPlex in West Des Moines, bringing together players, parents, coaches, referees and club leaders for an inspiring weekend of education and development. With each day focusing on a different aspect of the game, the event reinforced Iowa Soccer Association’s commitment to growing soccer at every level.

Through expert-led discussions, hands-on workshops and direct engagement with industry leaders, attendees gained valuable insights into talent identification, player development, coach development and methodology, referee education and technical leadership development.

Player Development Day

The 2025 Iowa Soccer Symposium opened with Player Development Day, which was a deep dive into talent identification and player pathways. Supported by representatives from FC Cincinnati of Major League Soccer and US Youth Soccer, the day provided players and parents with an inside look at the Olympic Development Program (ODP) and additional growth opportunities available for aspiring athletes.

“This year’s symposium weekend transcended typical learning, becoming a celebration of the entire youth soccer community,” said Damien Corrieri, Player Development Director at Iowa Soccer Association. “Parents, players, coaches and referees all shared unique experiences, focused on deepening knowledge and igniting passion for the game. One highlight was witnessing our players and parents engage directly with MLS and US Youth Soccer staff, exploring the value of ODP and fostering open dialogue about our collective role in player development.”

The unique access to professionals at the highest levels during Player Development Day helped to provide families and players with a clearer path forward in their soccer journeys.

Coach Development Day

The second day of the Iowa Soccer Symposium focused on coaching education and club technical leadership development. Designed for club, high school and college coaches, as well as referees, club leaders and administrators, sessions covered modern coaching methodologies, player development strategies and best practices for leaders.

“The Iowa Soccer Symposium was a holistic learning experience that positively impacted players, coaches, parents, referees and club leaders. From modern coaching methodologies to insightful discussions on player and coach development, referee education and parent engagement, the symposium provided high-quality, evidence-based learning for every stakeholder in the game,” said Gareth Smith, Chief Technical Officer at Iowa Soccer Association. “The lineup of top-class presenters challenged perspectives, sparked discussion and reinforced the importance of our soccer community collaborating to grow the game at all levels. More than just an event, it is a catalyst for progress, fostering a culture of continuous learning and development across all levels of the soccer community. A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to making this a powerful and inspiring experience!”

With expert guidance and thought-provoking discussions, participants left Coach Development Day with new tools and strategies to implement in their programs.

Referee Development Day

The Iowa Soccer Symposium concluded with Referee Development Day, which was dedicated to the enhancement of officiating skills, game management and professional development. Sessions focused on technical training and communication, as well as strengthening the relationship between referees and the broader Iowa soccer community. The event provided both classroom instruction and on-field training, led by experienced mentors, instructors and Referee Coaches.

“The focus was not solely on individual skill but on cultivating a culture where we grow together with our clubs, united as an essential part of the Iowa soccer community,” said Hidajet Tica, Referee & Sportsmanship Director at Iowa Soccer Association, underscoring the importance of a unified approach to officiating.

The collaborative mindset that was shared at the Iowa Soccer Symposium ensures that referees continue to develop alongside the game, fostering a stronger and more cohesive soccer environment across Iowa.

Looking Ahead

With each day of the 2025 Iowa Soccer Symposium offering unique learning opportunities, the event successfully united players, parents, coaches, referees and leaders in a shared mission to grow the game in Iowa.

“The Iowa Soccer Symposium has grown into a three-day event that is critical to the advancement of soccer in our state,” said Dan Cataldi, Chief Executive Officer at Iowa Soccer Association. “Beyond just Iowa Soccer members, stakeholders from various organizations come together for a weekend to focus on improving the sport in Iowa. This event will continue to expand and be the foundation for the growth and development of soccer in Iowa as we bring together those engaged in the game for a celebration of learning and developing. We are already planning for 2026 and know that the success we have had sets a high bar, but one we are confident we will surpass.”

As Iowa Soccer Association continues to invest in education and development, the momentum from this event will carry forward into future initiatives, training programs and resources designed to support the next generation of soccer players, coaches and referees. 2025 Iowa Soccer Copa Clásico: A Weekend to Remember

2025 Iowa Soccer Copa Clásico

Iowa Soccer Association hosted its 2025 Copa Clásico last weekend, drawing youth soccer teams and supporters from across the region. Held at two state-of-the-art venues in the TBK Bank Sports Complex and the Forest Grove Sports Complex in Bettendorf, the tournament was widely expanded this year to include 126 teams, providing even more winter playing opportunities for youth athletes in the state. Further, the 2025 Copa Clásico served as an all-inclusive event for the soccer community, with participating teams representing a variety of youth soccer associations such as US Youth Soccer, US Club Soccer, AYSO and USSSA Soccer.

“We could not be more excited following a record-breaking event, with the expansion to two facilities and nearly doubling the team entries from the previous year,” said Mike Wilson, Member Services Program Director at Iowa Soccer Association. “We are grateful for the opportunity to bring soccer communities together to make the game better. We hosted 126 teams representing 30 clubs, generating 252 games, and provided over 1,500 youth soccer players an opportunity to compete across 23 unique divisions.”

With limited access to quality winter competition, the Copa Clásico fills a critical gap in the youth soccer calendar. The format, featuring 7v7 for younger age groups and 6v6 for older teams, offers a dynamic experience for each of the participants. Teams in age groups ranging from 9U to 19U took part in the event, with each side guaranteed four games over two days. The format of the matches included a 35-minute running clock with no halftime, ensuring an exciting flow of game activity.

“We want to send out a big thanks to Visit QC and the TBK Bank Sports Complex for always being such great partners and helping us host memorable soccer experiences,” said Craig Winger, Chief Member Services Officer of Iowa Soccer Association. “The Copa Clásico is a unique small-sided event that demands more touches, finesse and creativity, leading to more goals and tons of fun. A huge shoutout to the clubs, coaches, teams, referees and parents who show up and make it all possible!”

Beyond the field, the Copa Clásico was a celebration of community and connection. The event brought together players, families and teams from across the region, creating a vibrant atmosphere that extended beyond the sidelines. Copa Clásico is open to all US Soccer Federation affiliates, further underscoring its mission of bringing the soccer community together. Tournament sponsors included TBK Bank Sports Complex, Forest Grove Sports Complex, VisitQC and SportsQC, SEQL App and Fine Designs, all of which played a crucial role in making the event such a great success.

The final whistle blew on the 2025 Iowa Copa Clásico on Sunday evening, marking the end of a weekend filled with competitive matches and meaningful connections. For young athletes, it was a valuable opportunity to develop their skills and showcase their talent, while families and spectators enjoyed the chance to support their teams and engage with the broader soccer community.

“Copa Clásico is a phenomenal event that brings together kids registered with various soccer clubs belonging to different organizations who otherwise may not have the chance to play each other,” said Dan Cataldi, Chief Executive Officer of the Iowa Soccer Association. “With only about half of the teams participating being Iowa Soccer members, it was great to see the entire soccer community come together and support a fun event in the middle of a cold Iowa winter. With events like Copa Clásico, Iowa Soccer remains committed to our mission of Providing Soccer Opportunities.”

Prior to the competition on the field this past weekend, the 2025 Copa Clásico officially kicked off on Friday night with activities that included ODP regional training. Additionally, a referee training and development session was held with the support of the Iowa Referee Committee (IRC), featuring more than 30 new officials receiving guidance from referee coaches and mentors.

“Every great referee starts with the first step. Last Friday at TBK in Bettendorf, we laid the foundation for tomorrow’s game-changers,” said Hidajet Tica, Iowa Soccer Referee & Sportsmanship Director. “Grassroots clinics are where passion meets precision and every whistle counts. In the final count, we had 31 participants, and what is more important to mention is that we had a great mixture of youth and adults. This could not have been done without the support of the IRC SDI, Alec Clark, who organized the instructors for the evening and brought three top-notch presenters. This is the beginning of a great partnership between Iowa Soccer and IRC for the eastern part of the state, having a vision for a brighter future for our soccer community.”

Iowa Soccer Association is committed to building upon this successful tradition of the Copa Clásico, providing players and teams with additional opportunities to compete and grow in the sport. Events like the Copa Clásico highlight the strength and enthusiasm of the Iowa soccer community, setting the stage for continual development of the sport for many years to come.

Iowa Soccer Association Announces Partnership with PandoPartner

Iowa Soccer Association Announces Partnership with PandoPartner

Iowa Soccer Association announced today that it has chosen sponsorship management platform, PandoPartner, to support the modernization of how their corporate partnerships are planned, managed and tracked. Iowa Soccer is one of six members in the United States Consortium of State Associations (USCCSA) to migrate onto the PandoPartner platform, joining Arizona Youth Soccer, Kentucky Youth Soccer Association, Massachusetts Youth Soccer Association, New Jersey Youth Soccer and Tennessee State Soccer Association.

“Brands want to invest in grassroots soccer as an incredible platform to connect with families and athletes across the U.S.,” said Mitch Thompson, CEO of PandoPartner. “Our goal is to help the state associations across the country to showcase their value more quantifiably and to demonstrate sponsor servicing excellence, while enabling staff to focus on high value activities and endeavors. We’re extremely excited for this opportunity.”

This relationship with PandoPartner will enable State Associations to more easily manage and automate the necessary tracking and reporting work that goes into successful corporate partnerships, while ultimately driving a better partner experience for brands that invest in grassroots soccer.

“We are excited to partner with Mitch and his team at PandoPartner,” said Dan Cataldi, Chief Executive Officer of the Iowa Soccer Association. “Their platform will help our team at Iowa Soccer better manage our relationships, deliver on promises, and execute on partnerships that benefit the tens of thousands players, coaches, referees, administrators, and supporters in our membership. PandoPartner will help the team at Iowa Soccer by modernizing our partnership management and making sure we are doing things in an efficient manner, allowing us to spend more time building the sport and providing a top-notch experience for our members.”

Iowa Soccer is one of the founding members of the United States Consortium of State Associations, which currently represents more than 900,000 athletes across 16 US Youth Soccer State Associations. This collaboration with PandoPartner aims to position grassroots soccer as a sophisticated partnership opportunity, adding modern collaboration techniques and reporting to the already high levels of sponsor servicing that corporate partners have come to expect from the State Associations.

“Working in collaboration with U.S. Soccer and US Youth Soccer, the USCSA’s mission is to maximize and unlock the true potential of State Associations by creating a highly functioning network of State Associations,” said Hans Hobson, Tennessee State Soccer Association CEO and USCSA Sponsorship Chair. “We believe PandoPartner is a strategic partner to help State Associations achieve our goals.”

Blowing the Whistle on Referee Abuse

Between 2018 and 2022, the State of Iowa experienced a 46% decline in certified soccer referees, leading to numerous youth and adult matches lacking adequate officiating. Recognizing the critical role that referees play in ensuring fair and equitable competition, Iowa Soccer Association launched its Referee Development Program (RDP) in May 2023. This initiative represents a substantial investment of more than a quarter million dollars over three years, aiming to recruit, retain, train and support referees across the state.

The decline in referees is not unique to Iowa. Nationwide, youth sports programs are grappling with a significant shortage of officials. Surveys reveal that over 70% of referees leave the role due to verbal abuse and harassment from parents, coaches and players, leading to significant challenges in referee recruitment and retention.

“RDP focuses not just on individual skill but on creating a culture where we grow together with our clubs, united as a vital part of the Iowa soccer community,” said Hidajet Tica, Iowa Soccer Referee & Sportsmanship Director.

The RDP offers Iowa Soccer members exclusive access to resources that promote “Respect 4 All,” emphasizing the collective responsibility of coaches, players, referees and supporters in fostering a positive game environment. By addressing participant behavior and enhancing referee training, the program aspires to elevate the overall soccer experience in Iowa.

Through targeted programming that addresses participant behavior during games, along with a strategic partnership with the Iowa Referee Committee (IRC), the RDP is focused on recruiting, retaining, training and supporting referees. This collaborative effort aims to increase the number of certified soccer officials in Iowa while enhancing the overall gameday experience for players, coaches and fans alike.

“Referee development programs are the cornerstone of fair play in sports,” said Rob Sorey, Iowa State Referee Administrator. “By investing in the training and growth of officials, we not only ensure the integrity of the game but also cultivate the next generation of leaders who uphold the values of fairness, respect and accountability.”

The impact of the RDP has already been evident, with a number of clubs actively participating in the program. These collaborations are pivotal in rebuilding the referee community and ensuring that matches are conducted with integrity and professionalism.

“Des Moines Soccer Club has been participating in the Referee Development Program (RDP) since its inception,” said Steve Wilke-Shapiro, Director of Referees at Des Moines Soccer Club. “A major benefit we have experienced is that our program now provides a more professional experience for our families at very little cost. It is great to see the 12 to 14 year old aspiring referees out on the fields (dressed in their RDP shirts) engaging with kids, teaching soccer, and of course building their own skill set.”

By taking a comprehensive approach, the RDP not only addresses the immediate shortage of referees but also seeks to create a sustainable community for officials. The initiative directly tackles key factors contributing to the shortage, such as toxic sideline behavior, by promoting a culture of respect and accountability among all stakeholders. Through investment in education, support and long-term solutions, Iowa Soccer Association is focused on taking significant steps to secure the future of soccer in the state.

“The RDP was designed with two basic principles to increase the number of referees,” said Dan Cataldi, Chief Executive Officer of the Iowa Soccer Association. “First, eliminate barriers by making it easier to get started. Second, it aims to improve the experience for new referees by making what they learn in training more relevant to what they experience and by creating a more positive environment at the field.”

The Referee Development Program (RDP) was established through the Innovate to Grow Fund, which was introduced by the U.S. Soccer Federation in pursuit of its mission to make soccer the preeminent sport in the United States. The initiative seeks to develop underserved soccer communities, with an overall focus on building the sport at the grassroots level.
